Role Summary:

As a Manager of Technical Writing, you will lead information development projects and teams. You will carry responsibility for projects meeting requirements and deadlines. You will serve as a resource for other team members, and influence information development strategy for the entire organization. You must collaborate with other functional groups to set content delivery goals, track progress, and carry out these goals.

Essential Responsibilities:

In this role, you will develop and deliver high-quality content for the Digital Applications organization using the following professional characteristics:

  • Superior writing skills, namely a command of grammar, syntax, diction, and the conventions and best practices of writing a variety of technical documents

  • Excellent leadership and collaboration skills: ability to work with and coordinate the work of other writers, considered a leader on the team

  • Expert-level knowledge of core technical communication concepts, such as topic-based authoring, minimalism, task-oriented design, single-sourcing

  • Thorough understanding of core information development processes (with collaborative ability to drive both adaption and adoption, such as content planning, content creation, content review, translation/localization best practices

  • Excellent skills in the process of breaking down software processes into tasks necessary to the targeted user and effectively explaining those tasks to the user

  • Superior ability to collaborate with subject matter experts to research a software product, determine functionality and design features, then communicate those effectively to the user

  • Excellent project management skills/ ability to lead a writing project: ability to coordinate work of other writers, accurately estimate scope and time, create and work to deadlines, take multiple variables (including other functional areas) into account when setting a schedule

  • Drive increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse

Qualifications/Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Technical Writing or related field.

  • A minimum of 6 years professional experience in technical writing.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.

  • Must be willing to travel (<5% of the time).

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Roanoke, VA.

  • Concentration or minor in Computer Science or other technology-related degree is a plus.

  • Experience managing a team, preferably within the technical writing discipline.

  • Ability to identify, develop, and deliver training to other members of the Technical Writing Team.

  • Outstanding skills in editing (QA for documentation) – ability to recognize errors and opportunities for developmental improvement in a variety of information deliverables

  • Outstanding skills at researching and leveraging information architecture principles to create a content structure that supports a wide variety of information types and deliverables

  • Clear understanding of Lean/Agile/XP software development processes, their application to GE projects, and how to drive information development in these processes

  • Strong understanding of the major aspects of software design, development, and QA and ability to leverage this understanding to inform planning and execution for information development projects.

Technical Expertise:

  • Expert understanding and experience using structured authoring (e.g., DITA).

  • Excellent skills with the authoring tools used by the Digital Applications information development org: primarily oXygen Author, but also Flare and RoboHelp.

  • Experience with CMS systems, preferably Astoria.

  • Ability to work with, modify, and troubleshoot HTML, CSS, and XML markup.

  • Thorough understanding of various content delivery methods, including single-sourced, multi-channel publications and on-premises and cloud help implementation.

  • Demonstrated understanding of style guides for technical communications (e.g., Microsoft Style Guide for Technical Publications)

  • Outstanding ability to define and research user profiles and to create content targeted appropriately to meet user goals

  • Strong domain and product knowledge, including appropriate terminology, with a clear understanding of GE Digital product line(s) and offerings, competitive landscapes and associated industries

  • Understanding of how GE Digital drives value to its customers and how the information development function fits into GE Digital’s overall business strategy
